George Hadley was born in Nottingham. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Border Regiment, he attested for full-time service at Carlisle on 4 March 1892, aged 18 years, 7 months. With the regiment he served in the East Indies, January- November 1894; Waziristan, November 1894-March 1895; East Indies, March 1895-March 1902; and South Africa, March-August 1902. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1903 and discharged on 3 March 1904.
