South Africa 1834-53 (J. O’Connell, 7th Dn. Gds.) edge bruising, very fine £300-400

John O’Connell was born in Charlefield, Co. Cork. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 94th Regiment at Maidstone, Kent on 9 September 1843, aged 18 years. He transferred to the 7th Dragoon Guards in August 1844. Served 3 years in the Cape of Good Hope and over 9 years in the East Indies. Served in South Africa during the Second Kaffir War, 1846-47 - the 7th Dragoon Guards being severely mauled at Burns Hill, 15 April 1846. He was wounded by a gunshot to the neck at Black Drift on 18 April 1846. Having completed his period of service, O’Connell was discharged with a pension at his own request on 21 September 1867. At the time of his discharge he was in possession of four good conduct badges and the above medal. With copied discharge papers and roll extract.
