At the beginning of the war the 7th Dragoon Guards were stationed at Secunderabad, India. The regiment entered France on 13 October 1914 as part of the 9th (Secunderabad) Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Indian Cavalry Division.

Private Eric Simmonds, 7th Dragoon Guards entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 13 October 1914. Later promoted to Serjeant. Proceeding with his regiment to Iraq, he died on 26 December 1919 and was buried in the Baghdad (North Gate) Cemetery.
