Thomas Smith was born in Stockton, Co. Durham and enlisted at Middlesborough. Serving in the 2nd Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers, he was killed in action, France/Flanders on 18 April 1915, aged 21 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was the son of John Thomas Smith, of 12 Kirby Street, Stockton-on-Tees.
