Captain James Stirling was born in 1884 and educated at Wellington College and Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He went to the Western Front on 6 October 1914 and was killed in action near Armentieres on 2 January 1915 whilst serving with the 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). A bronze tablet was placed in the Rockbeare Parish Church to his memory and also that of his younger brother, Lieutenant W. D. Stirling, R.N.
