Stephen (1135-1154), Cut Halfpenny, York group, ‘Ornamented’ series, bust right with lis-headed sceptre, reads [s]tiefne, rev. cross fourchée, pellet in cross-ends and centre, lis in angles, girard reading outwards in ornamental letters, 0.65g/2h (Mack –; N –; S 1314). Very fine, apparently UNIQUE £400-500
Although of similar design to the Lincoln pence (Mack 169ff), this coin in of markedly finer style, particularly the unusually ornate reverse lettering. Gerard is a known moneyer for Stephen at Ipswich in class 2 and Hedon in class 7
