Samuel McClatchey was born in Durban, South Africa on 8 December 1902. During 1917-19 he was employed as a Clerk in a real estate office in Belfast. During 1919-26 he served in the Scottish Rifles in Kurdistan and in India. Then as a civilian in Canada, he served in the 48th Highlanders of Canada (Reserve), 1929-39. He attested for the Canadian Field Force on 4 September 1939. With the 48th Highlanders he went to England, transferring to the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in August 1941 and qualifying as an Armourer. In May 1944 he transferred to the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Appointed an Armourer Sergeant in September 1944. Latterly served in Northwest Europe. McClatchey was discharged on 9 June 1945. He was awarded the Efficiency Medal and clasp in 1950.
