Henry Rolland was appointed an Ensign in the 19th Bombay Native Infantry on 5 January 1828 and was promoted to Lieutenant in October 1839. With them he served in the First Afghan War seeing service at Ghuznee. He was advanced to Captain in January 1843 and transferred to the 27th Bombay Native Infantry in January 1846, being promoted to Major in June 1854. The 27th partially mutinied at Kolhapur in August 1857 and in 1858 the unit was disbanded. Rolland retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 4 December 1854.
