Samuel Quick was born in Exeter, Devonshire on 6 September 1858. Entering the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 25 May 1880, he was confirmed in that rank in April 1882. Served on Ruby, May 1880-December 1882, seeing service in the Egypt War 1882. Promoted to Chief Engine Room Artificer in July 1891 when on Speedwell. Pensioned ashore on 23 May 1900.
