Ronald Alwyn Grey was born in Perth, Western Australia on 2 July 1930. He graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, on 12 December 1951 and was alloted to the Royal Australian Infantry. He served in the Korea War as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, 13 June-23 July 1952 and 14 August 1952-12 June 1953. In 1962 he attended the Staff College at Camberley. He was mentioned in despatches as a Major in the Army Service Corps for his services in Borneo, 1966. After a number of staff and regimental appointments both in Australia and overseas, he was appointed Commanding Officer of the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Infantry Regiment on 25 November 1968. During the Vietnam War he was a Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the 7th Battalion R.A.R. in Phuc Tuy Province, February 1970-March 1971, for which services he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. Grey later attained the rank of Major-General; was awarded the Order of Australia (A.O.) in 1983 - ‘For service to the Australian Army, particularly as Chief of Operations and as General Officer Commanding Field Force Command.’ In 1984 he was awarded a second clasp to the National Medal he was awarded in 1977. Major-General Grey later served as Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, 1983-88. In 1988 he was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive review of the rescue services in New South Wales. The recommendations of the study were implemented by the N.S.W. Government in 1989.
