Ex Elson and Leyland Robinson Collections. Medal illustrated in Sudden Death - Sudden Glory, by David Ingham.

John Cartwright was born at Buxton, Derbyshire, and enlisted into the 59th Foot at Manchester in October 1806. He served throughout as a Private and was discharged on 3 November 1814, in consequence of having been wounded in the head by a shell-burst at St Sebastian. When he applied for a pension in February 1858, he was living at Holmfirth, Yorkshire, and described as being 73 years of age and by trade a clothier. He was granted a pension of 6d per day and was still drawing his pension at Manchester in 1876. Sold with research.
