Only 3 officers and 6 other ranks of the East Lancashire Regiment received the medal for the Afghan War of 1919, being attached to the 1/1st Kent Regiment (T.A.).
John Arnold Brothers was commissioned into the 2/4th East Lancashire Regiment and served with this unit in France from 2 March 1917. Later he spent two years in India, part of the time with the Indian Army, attached to the 21st Punjabis, and subsequently served with the 1/1st Kent Regiment (T.A.) in the Afghan campaign of 1919. During the Second World War he served as a Major in the Royal Artillery at Dunkirk and in North Africa.
