Thomas Giles was born in Chelsea, London, on 5 April 1873. A Packer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marines at London on 5 August 1890. He transferred to the Royal Navy as a Sick Berth Attendant at Haslar Hospital on 1 April 1893. Promoted to 2nd Sick Berth Steward in August 1897 when on Barfleur; Sick Berth Steward in July 1901 when at Vernon, he attained the rank of Chief Sick Berth Steward in June 1911 when at Haslar Hospital.
He was pensioned ashore in January 1912 but returned to service in August 1914 and served throughout the war until demobilised in March 1919. With copied R.M. and R.N. service papers.
