Alfred Banks was born in Leamington, Southampton. He attested for the Army at Gosport on 8 September 1870, aged 17 years, 3 months. He served with the 2nd Foot from September 1870 until September 1874 when he was transferred to the A.S.C. With them he served in Gibraltar, October 1876-November 1881 and in Egypt, October 1884-August 1885. He attained the rank of 3rd Class Staff Sergeant in April 1881 and was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1889. Staff Sergeant Banks was discharged on 8 September 1891.
