There is uncertainty about the number of moneyers at Winchester represented by various forms of the names Ælfstan, Æstan, Æethestan, Elfstan, Ertan, Estan etc, all listed by Freeman. BMC 1388 reads Æstann Loc, while BMC 1396 of Loc alone has a pellet in one angle. The exact reading Elstan is not included in either reference
