Research by Jorge Proctor has shown that in 1505 a series of silver and copper coins were ordered to be struck at the Seville mint for use specifically in Santo Domingo (modern Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, Cuba and Nombre de Dios (Panama). The réal was the largest denomination authorised. This coin predates the opening of the Mexico City and Santo Domingo mints by a few decades and represents one of the earliest issues intended for use in the Americas
