United States of America, Confederate States, Set of proof backs for Five, Ten, Twenty, Fifty, One Hundred and Five Hundred Dollars, grey and black on light card, all with pencilled dates of November or December 1863 in margins (Criswell pp.229-32) [6]. Some light foxing and thinning in places, otherwise good very fine £600-800

Five Dollars only illustrated. Straker & Sons of England were contracted to produce designs for the backs of a new series of notes to be issued in 1864. Printing plates and other materials were shipped across the Atlantic but the final vessel, attempting to beat the blockade, was captured by Union forces. There is no confirmation as to numbers of surviving plates or when pulls and reprints were taken
