Gibson, E. (ed), Camden’s Britannia, Newly Translated into English; with large Additions and Improvements, Oxford, 1695, 31 prelims, cxcv + 1,116pp, many engraved plates and maps folded in, index and Appendix, frontispiece portrait of Camden, portrait of Sir Colin Campbell and one other pasted in, letter in envelope postmarked 1869 and a French Assignat, Mai 1793, pasted on inside front cover (Dekesel C26; Manville 50). Large paper copy, original brown leather, ribbed spine rebacked by Amanda Slope, Great Missenden; some rubbing to extremities, otherwise in excellent overall condition, internally fine and clean, the best edition £700-900

Edmund Gibson (1669-1748), bishop of Lincoln and of London, employed Obadiah Walker to revise the numismatic section of Camden’s pioneering work, which includes 8 plates of Roman, Saxon and British coins, first published in 1607
