Alfred Hawkins was born in Flempton, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. A Milkman by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion East Kent Regiment, he attested for the Corps of Hussars at Woolwich on 8 November 1898, aged 18 years, 9 months. Posted to the 13th Hussars, he served in South Africa, January 1900-October 1902. Hawkins was severely wounded on 15 May 1901 whilst serving with Colonel Colville’s Column - suffering bullet wounds to the abdomen and left forearm. Making a recovery, Hawkins then went on to serve in India, September 1904-January 1906. Returning home, he was discharged on 1 July 1906 as ‘medically unfit for further service’. Latterly living at 10 Ilchester Place, London, W.14, Alfred Hawkins died on 10 April 1948. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
