John Barnard Norton Whyte died on active service on 18 April 1942, while serving in H.M.S. Sir William Hilary, which ship had been requisitioned by the Admiralty for air sea rescue work in October 1940. He is buried in Oronsay Priory Burial Ground, Isle of Oronsay; the above described forwarding box is addressed to the recipient’s father, ‘Mr. D. M. Whyte, 2 Battery Terrace, Oban, Argyll, Scotland.’
