Albert Xavier Lavertine was born on 4 December 1871. He qualified as a Medical Practitioner in Ireland in 1893, gaining the L.M., R.C.P. Ireland and R.C.S. Ireland. Serving in the Royal Navy, he became a Surgeon Commander with seniority of 15 May 1909. In an edition of the New Zealand Free Lance in 1904, it was recorded, ‘An engagement is announced between Surgeon A. X. Lavertine, R.N., H.M.S. Katoomba, youngest son of Mr John A. Lavertine, of Castleconnel, Co. Limerick, and Miss Ethel Gunn, only daughter of Mr Walter W. S. Gunn, of Burke, New South Wales and Dalgetty Street, St. Kilda (Melbourne). ....’ In the early years of the Great War he served aboard the Monarch. With copied service papers.
