‘Tah Ping Chang’ is a corruption of ‘Taipingshan’, a district situated in the western half of the City of Victoria on Hong Kong Island. Much of the district was known for its primitive, crowded and unsanitary living conditions - which proved to be the ideal breeding ground for the plague.
