Archibald Neil Campbell was appointed Ensign in the 18th Royal Irish Regiment on 14 February 1828, becoming Lieutenant in April 1831 and Captain in November 1842. He served in the expedition under Sir George d’Aguilar up the Canton River in April 1847 and commanded the attacking parties against the North and South Wongton and several other forts. He served also throughout the Burmah campaign of 1852-53 and commanded the 18th Royal Irish at the attack and capture of Martaban. He was on board the Rattler at the attack and destruction of the Rangoon and Dallah stockades, and was present at the capture of Prome and the repulse of the night attack. For his services in this campaign he was mentioned in despatches and promoted to Brevet Major, effective from 9 December 1852. Campbell was confirmed in the rank of Major in June 1855 and promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in March 1858.
