In 1824 David Malcolmson built a cotton mill at Portlaw and over the next 40 years his family developed an extensive business empire. During this period new housing, schools, medical facilities and even a Provident Society were established to cater for the expanding workforce. The company began paying employees at its Mayfield factory with card tokens which were readily accepted because of the strength and good reputation of the company
