China 1842 (R. Macpherson, 1st Lieut. Madras Artillery) fitted with a replacement swivel scroll suspension, silver buckle on ribbon, edge bruise to obverse, very fine £650-750
Ronald Macpherson was born in 1817 and first commissioned in the Madras Artillery in June 1836. Latterly serving with the Royal Artillery, he attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1861. During his military career he was Captain Commandant of the Shanghai Volunteer Rifle Corps, 1854-56; Honorary Colonel, S.V.R.C., 1864; Resident Councillor, Singapore, 1855-67; Superintendent of Roads and Convicts at Singapore, c.1856; and in 1867 was appointed 1st Colonial Secretary. He died on 7 December 1869.
