William Harfield was born in Cheriton, Hampshire, but was resident at nearby Liss at the time of his enlistment in London. He subsequently died in Egypt on 7 November 1918, aged 34 years, while serving in the Railway Operating Division, R.E., and is buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery; sold with copied MIC entry confirming his entitlement to only the British War & Victory Medals and statement ‘Retd. (992 K.R. 1923)’.
