Herbert John Freeman was born at Blindley Heath, Surrey, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Freeman, later resident at nearby South Godstone, and enlisted at Lingfield. He died of wounds in the Ypres salient on 15 August 1917, while serving in 129th Field Company, R.E. and is buried in the Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium - Captain Noel Chavasse, V.C. and Bar, is also buried in this cemetery, having died of wounds in the same offensive; sold with copied MIC entry confirming entitlement to only the B.W.M. & Victory Medals.
