An original and poignant application form for prize money in respect of the widow of Private Daniel Mullins, 97th Foot, who died in the relief of Lucknow operations, the detailed questionnaire completed on her behalf by the Curate of her parish church in Rochdale, and dated 10 August 1863, and bearing original postage marks for onward despatch to the Secretary of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, wear at creases but content good £80-100

Elizabeth Mullins’ application for a share of her late husband’s prize money appears to have resulted in partial success, a red ink inscription stating ‘Half to widow’. Her husband, Daniel, entered the 97th Foot direct from the Militia and, according to her, sent money home from India - alas, she was unable to include the relevant letters with her application, for they appear to have ended up in the possession of his uncle, ‘and I cannot get them’; here then, a potential candidate for the other half of the late soldier’s prize money. At the time of her application, Elizabeth was resident at 2 Queen Street, Rochdale.
