A scarce Victorian officer’s regimental pattern presentation sword of the Shropshire Yeomanry Cavalry, the slightly curved 90cm blade by Hawkes & Co, Piccadilly, London, etched with crowned VR cypher, Shropshire Yeomanry Cavalry, foliate scrolls etc, and within a central panel a presentation inscription ‘Presented to Quarter Master J Vaughan, 1st. Prize Regimental Sword Excercise. The Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty 1897’ steel silver plated guard of regimental pattern, based on that of the Household Cavalry, with applied regimental cypher SYC, three logger heads (leopards heads) the border mounted with twelve brass studs, silver plated backstrap and chequered pommel, fish-skin covered grip bound with silver wire, contained in a silver plated scabbard of Household Cavalry pattern with two brass suspension mounts and chape, minor staining to blade otherwise good condition overall £500-600
Vaughan from Shrewsbury was a member of the Oswestry Troop and was best shot in the regiment in 1883.
