Stuart Robert McGuiness was born in New Zealand in October 1916. He served during World War II in the ranks of the 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, in Greece, crete, Libya and Italy. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in June 1945, but resigned his commission in December 1948. He subsequently joined the Regular Force as a Warrant Officer II in the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps, being seconded to the 1st Fiji Infantry Regiment in Malaya as R.Q.M.S. from December 1951 to July 1954. On return to New Zealand he was appointed R.S.M., 3rd Armoured Regiment, before retiring in Septemper 1955 with the rank of Temporary Captain.
