Albert Mather was born in Stockport, Cheshire and enlisted in the Cheshire Regiment direct from the 4th (Volunteer) Battalion in February 1902, aged 20 years. Embarked for South Africa, he served in the 3rd Volunteer Company of the 2nd Battalion from March to July 1902, and was discharged on his return to the U.K. later that year.
