Serving throughout his career in the 60th Rifles, Webbe Butler received his first commission by purchase on 19 September 1834. He gained the rank of Lieutenant by purchase in December 1840. He was promoted to Captain in July 1844, Major in March 1855 and Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1858. Butler commanded the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles in the supression of the Indian Mutiny in the Shahabad District of Bengal and was wounded. He served throughout the 1860 campaign in China.
