Edward George Mitchell was born in St. Sidwell’s, Exeter on 7 November 1876. A Gardener by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1892 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class a year later. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman when on the Penguin in May 1895 and Able Seaman when on the Endymion in June 1896. He served on the 3rd class cruiser Pelorus, June 1898-June 1901, being promoted to Leading Seaman in April 1901, and was one of only 13 men of the ship to receive the Q.S.A. Medal with clasp for Natal. He was advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class whilst on the Cambridge in November 1901 and was appointed Ship’s Corporal 2nd Class aboard the Dwarf in October 1902 and 1st Class on the St. George in July 1904. When serving on Cornwall in July 1908 he was disrated to Leading Seaman and in the following year he purchased his discharge. Sold with copied service papers.
