Denis Cronan, a native of County Cork, enlisted in the 13th Foot in August 1859, aged 17 years, and served with the Colours for 22 years, his overseas postings being in the Cape of Good Hope 1861-63 and Mauritius 1863-67. He was discharged at Taunton on completing his second period of engagement in October 1881, the census of the previous year listing him as resident in Stoke Damerel with his wife and three daughters.
