John William Jayes was born in Bethnal Green, London. A Carpenter by occupation, he attested for service in the Royal Engineers at Woolwich on 3 November 1857, aged 19 years. With the R.E. he served in India, Mauritius, China and Cape of Good Hope. He was discharged having completed his period of service on 13 December 1878. Sold with copied service papers.
