An interesting British officer’s mameluke mounted with a Portuguese blade, the 78cm wide curved flat-solid section blade back-edged and with single narrow groove to either side, undecorated but for an engraved and gilt presentation inscription ‘....TENIENTE CORONEL RVANO AL CAPITAN JOHNS’ , the blade presumably presented by a Portuguese officer to a British officer who had seen service in the Penisula, copper-gilt mameluke hilt, cross guard cast and chased with acanthus, the ecusson decorated with reversed C scrolls, quillons in the form of acanthus, ivory grip plaques, backstrap chased with foliate patterns, contained in an associated black leather scabbard, with three matching copper-gilt mounts chased with bands of oakleaves, from a Royal Navy mameluke for an officer of flag rank, gilding worn, repair to scabbard £300-350
