Portrait, hand-tinted portrait photograph attributed to Cornet John Campbell Erskine MacNab, 3rd Regiment Bengal Light Cavalry, within glass frame, in leather case, 148 x 125mm., good condition £150-200
The portrait photograph is believed to be that of Cornet John Campbell Erskine MacNab in the uniform of the 3rd Regiment Bengal Light Cavalry. MacNab was killed in action on 10 May 1857, one of the first officer casualties of the Mutiny. Taken to task for wearing the incorrect braid on his uniform by Hugh Gough (later V.C.) on the morning of the 10th, it was by this means that his hacked corpse was identified later in the day after being attacked by a mob. Sold with a copied research which includes an account of the incident and a letter MacNab wrote to his mother on the day of his death.
