Michael Brophy was born in Birmingham and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in September 1855, aged 19 years. In his subsequent career of 11 years with the Colours, he served in the East Indies for eight of them, seeing action in the Lucknow operations and receiving a wound in his left arm at the assault on Fort Birwa in the Oude on 21 October 1858. He was also present with the 3rd Battalion in the North West Frontier expedition against the Mohmands from December 1863 to January 1864. Brophy was discharged on the termination of his limited engagement in May 1866.
