Walter Sowter was born in the parish of St. Martin’s, Norwich and enlisted in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps in June 1889, aged 19 years. He subsequently served in the 1st Battalion out in India 1890-97, in which period he qualified for the above described India General Service Medals and clasps (his service record refers). Transferred to the Army Reserve on his return to the U.K., Sowter was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in South Africa, where he served from December 1899 to June 1902, and qualified for the above described Medals and clasps (his service record also refers). He was discharged on his return home in 1902.
