Bertram Fairbrother was born in Todenham, Gloucestershire. Formerly employed as an Omnibus Conductor, he attested for service in the Royal Artillery on 26 June 1894, aged 22 years, 2 months. Promoted to Corporal in August 1897, he served in the Boer War, 1 January 1900-24 December 1901, with the 76th Battery R.F.A. He was discharged at the termination of his first period of engagement on 25 June 1906.
