Infantry officer’s sword, a scarce 1895 pattern for an officer of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers the straight 89cm blade by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, No 22397 for 1878, etched with crowned VR cypher owners monogram ‘GMH’ and regimental device of St George & Dragon, flaming grenade, regimental motto and battle honours to ‘Lucknow’, regulation steel guard incorporating VR cypher, fish-skin covered grip bound with copper wire, gold bullion sword knot, complete with steel scabbard, scabbard dented and service wear overall but basically good condition £350-400
Major GM Harding was born at Old Springs Market Drayton in January 1859 and educated at Eton, commissioned into his regiment in 1878 he served with the 1st Battalion during the Afghan War in 1879 and after service during the Great War with the Remount Department he retired joining the Reserve of Officers, he died at Lymington in 1939.
