Awarded to British officers in the British Legion for the battle of San Sebastian, 5 May 1836. The British Legion together with Spanish loyalist troops commanded by General Lacy Evans, defeated the Carlists commanded by General Sagastibeltza who were beseiging the Basque city of San Sebastian. Despite winning the battle and the death of the Carlist general, the city remained under siege for a further two months.
