Private Charles Campleman, 15th (Leeds Pals) Battalion, Prince of Wales’s Own West Yorkshire Regiment, born Leeds, enlisted Colsterdale, was killed in action in France on 1 July 1916. He is commemorated by name on the Thiepval Memorial. In their attack on Serre on the opening day of the battle of the Somme, the Leeds Pals lost 13 officers and 209 other ranks killed, and another 2 officers and 24 men dying of wounds later.
