At 3.30p.m. on 11 July 1877, Private W. Green of the Army Hospital Corps, jumped into the River Stour in 9 feet of water, swam to Mr J. Evans of Iford and brought him to the bank. Mr J. Evans was the landlaord of the New Inn, Iford, Hampshire, who was pushed into the river trying to save his horse. (R.H.S. Case 21058).
