Charles Palmerston Turner was born at Plumstead on 2 February 1851 and was appointed a Surgeon with the 51st Regiment on 31 March 1874. During November 1877-January 1878 he served in the Peshawar Column, pacifying the Jowaki Afridis, on the North West Frontier. In the Afghanistan War 1878-80, he served in the Peshawar Valley Field Force and was present at the capture of the fort at Ali Musjid. Posted to the Royal Engineers, he next served in the Egypt Campaign of 1882 and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. Turner then served in the Suakin 1884 expedition, being present at the battles of El-Teb and Tamaai, and thence the Nile expedition to relieve Khartoum, where he served in the battle of Abu Klea. Still on active service in the Sudan, Surgeon Turner died on 5 March 1885 and was buried at Korti.
