Alexander Fortheath of Newton, Morayshire was educated at Aberdeen University. Appointed an Assistant Surgeon to the 37th Foot on 10 February 1843 and to the 2nd Dragoon Guards in November 1850; he was promoted to Staff Surgeon 2nd Class in March 1854, serving with the 1st Dragoons from October the same year. Promoted to Surgeon-Major with the 1st Dragoons in February 1863, he retired on Half Pay on 20 September 1864 and died at Hastings on 22 May 1866.
