Derrick N. Steward was awarded the Silver Star for the following deeds:
‘For gallantry in action on 23 July 1944. When the 10th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry took over a position in the line at Caumont, Captain Steward was responsible for the maintenance of over 30 miles of cable between Battalion H.Q. and company and platoon positions. In spite of repeated damage caused by continued shell and mortar fire, he successfully maintained these vital installations, and the courage he exhibited under fire was a constant source of inspiration to the men of his platoon’ (official U.S. records refer).
His mention in despatches ‘For gallant and distinguished services in North-West Europe’ was announced in the London Gazette of 10 May 1945.
Sold with a copy of the history of the 10th Battalion The Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment): Campaign in Europe 1944-1945, of which Steward was a co-author. The unit lost 15 officers and 226 other ranks.
