Howard Thomas Bowen, who was born in Newport and enlisted at Pontypool, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Bowen, tobacconists of Commercial Street, Newport, died of dysentery at Kilwa Geram, East Africa on 3 September 1917, while attached to the 2/2 King’s African Rifles. Aged 31 years, he was buried in the Dar es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.
