James Bates went on to serve in the Crimean War as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. London, aboard which ship he was ‘Discharged Dead’. His Crimean medal and clasp for Sebastopol, to which he was also entitled, were sent to his mother on 17 September 1856.
