This lot was sold as part of a special collection, The Collection of Victorian Bronze Pennies formed by the Late Laurie Bamford.

In the Bamford collection by 1976 (an article on Laurie and his collection in the Croydon Advertiser, 4 June 1976, mentions this as ‘his most prized coin’.
The best known specimen believed available to commerce was sold in these rooms, 12 December 2005, lot 700, for £2,200. At least one specimen with die no.5 has also been recorded (SNC April 1989, p.85; Satin 50)
